I am writing this letter in application for the position of Prefect and Head/Deputy Head prefect. I see this position as a central part of the school's foundations, traditions, and effective communication between students, teachers and the local community. I would like to present to the school and local community my enthusiasm of attending such an organised, talented and compassionate body the school is. This is a very responsible position, and I look up to it. I feel that it is very similar to my career path.

I have always found it daunting to find a career path that would suit me as a person. After a great deal of research during the summer, I discovered that I was set to become a dental health professional. The reason that this path appealed to me was due to several reasons. Being a dentist meant that I had a responsibility toward helping others in need, being attentive, and providing care to my patients. What particularly stood out to me was that my position meant that a lot of people could have confidence in me, which makes me highly respect the position of trust given to me. This included me being a good communicator and listening to people's requests of me. Compared to medicine, dentistry stood out to me because it meant that I could treat an individual and continue seeing then for ongoing maintenance and hence creating a strong bond. This is what I aspire to do as a prefect.

Although I only became part of the school recently, this does not suggest a lack of 'experience'. I have met many people and am familiar with a lot of the staff as well. I believe that I have integrated well into the community and have enjoyed being here since the first day of sixth form. However, this does not mean that I know everything that there is to know about the school, but I have a desire to learn more and get to know more people whether by helping, supporting or guiding them to the best of my ability. I believe that my various experiences from my previous school will help me recognise possible improvements that can be made here. This would allow a smoother, more focused and hassle-free learning environment for everyone.

A few of my experiences:

* My commitment to help the local community has lead me to volunteer at the Poole Oxfam charity shop, for the last 6 months. This position has showed me that responsibility, communication and maturity are the key part in leading a team, and especially dealing with people on a daily basis. This includes the ones who do not appreciate my efforts and respond aggressively when they do not have everything their way. I have learned to deal with them in a professional and calm manner.

* I am the only year 12 supervisor in the LRC, and have been doing administrative work ever since the LRC was built. My job includes working with other year 10 and 13 helpers. This involves issuing, returning and renewing books via the eclipse system, as well as being a reference point for any queries. I have a responsibility of keeping the noise down and taking control when someone is misbehaving. I have a say in decisions made in the LRC, such as buying new books, and providing a box for people to suggest books for the LRC to buy.

* Due to my father's background, I am fluent in Arabic. I use this skill by running an Arabic Club, for students who are interested in learning, every Friday lunch in the upper LRC. My father's background has given me the opportunity to travel to many countries, meeting new people, and understanding many cultural traditions practiced.

* Furthermore, I find that it is an obligation on me to help people who are less fortunate than myself. So, as part of the enrichment activity, I decided to help the students at Montacute. I always find this rewarding. I look forward to meeting the kids every week, and catch up with them, discuss their weekly events and help them learn more.

* At the beginning of sixth form, I found that there were many pupils at Poole Grammar who originally came from other cultures. I found that due to my similar background I was able to interact with them and understand them. As a result, I was one of the main organisers involved in this. I took this up with Mrs MaIice-Goulborne who wanted to help people from other backgrounds too. I then listed all the students' names, and then began to arrange one-2-one interviews, where I took notes about all the students. This helped me understand them both professionally and as a friend, so I could create a comfortable relationship between me and each one of them. Then we arranged a meeting where students who are in years 10-13 and who came from similar backgrounds, could create small groups with the pupils from years 8-9, and mentor the younger pupils. Whenever anyone has a problem, I always ask them to approach me about it, and we try to solve it. If I cannot help I always refer them back to someone in a higher authority than me.

* In this year's inter-form football tournament, I have contributed by playing some games whenever possible. And I believe everyone's dedication and sportsmanship lead us to be the champions of 2011. Team leadership was vital for our unbeaten record, causing us to achieve our ambitions.

* On my GCSE results day, I was also glad to achieve my well deserves 4A*; 6A; 4B. This showed me that my organisation in revision was effective and I have always carried this skill forward ever since. However, I also made a few mistakes at the time, which I am glad that I did. During exam time, I had a relationship dilemma which caused me a setback in some of my summer exams. This has taught me to prioritise my tasks, and always focus on what is more important in my life first. I have carried this skill forward as well, and it has helped me adjust greatly to sixth form.

* I have always been passionate about climbing. I used to attend the (indoor) climbing club in my old school. I helped organise it sometimes, as I was one of the few who attended every session. Climbing keeps me fit and healthy, and allows me to develop my problem solving skills. Climbing correlates with many of my day to day tasks, it is both mentally and physically challenging. However, the thrill of completing a course is very exciting; especially that climbing up a wall never means that I will reach a dead end, but that there are always several different means that will still lead me upward.

* Throughout my past, I have never been very confident due to a traumatic event during childhood, which caused me to be afraid of water. This meant that I could not swim very well. Up until two years ago, I decided that I would face my fear as it was affecting my lifestyle dramatically. So I chose to attend classes with a trained professional, this proved very challenging to me and so it caused me to fail several times. However, I was determined and I kept trying time after time. I believe my attitude and family's support finally paid off, as I was finally able to face my biggest fear. Ever since I have learned to swim which has made me very confident. I have shown this skill at Poole Grammar by being one of the first people to volunteer to read in assembly a few weeks back. It was very enjoyable and fulfilling. I hope I would be able to do such things in future, and experience the same feelings that I did before, in this challenging position that I hope I will get.

I highly respect this position and will treat it with utmost importance while still prioritising, organising and being responsible while performing different tasks.
